Frank Dunne (1943–2022)
7th December 2022

Frank Dunne will always be remembered as one of Ireland’s most influential figures in horse racing. A great character, he built an outstanding legacy through training, breeding and ownership at Hamwood Stud in County Meath.
Of course, Frank’s most publicized personal equestrian achievement came in 1983 when his mare Stanerra won the Japan Cup, establishing his place in racing history. His passion for the sport subsequently extended from the racecourse to the breeding shed, where his eye for quality and commitment to the thoroughbred produced lasting results.
We feel fortunate that we had the opportunity to work with Frank during what was a golden breeding period that produced some exceptional thoroughbreds who went on to achieve success at the highest level of international racing.
Among the highlights were three Group 1 winners:
- Youmzain (2003) – by Sinndar out of Sadmina.
- Creachadoir (2004) – by King’s Best out of Sadima.
- Night of Thunder (2011) – by Dubawi out of Forest Storm, who went on to win the 2,000 Guineas in 2014 and become a leading sire.

This level of Group 1 success possibly overshadowed other notable achievements in breeding further black-type winners and placed horses, including Princess Iris (2004), Mayonga (2003), Barring Decree (2005), Shreyas (2005) and Making Eyes (2008), as well as the jumps black-type performer Jamjaro (2007).
Looking back, I’m proud that we were fortunate enough to play some part in this remarkable chapter of Frank’s story. To have been involved with horses of this calibre, and to have worked alongside someone with such a passion for racing and breeding, is something I will always value.
Frank’s contribution to Irish racing and bloodstock was immense, and the horses associated with his name remain a lasting part of his legacy.
